- Integrity: Having integrity means you set moral principles and form an Image of yourself, ultimately creating a personal code of ethics. I create an Image for myself every day by living up to my personal code of ethics.
- Pride: Pride is this satisfaction that is brought on by personal achievements being fulfilled. I take pride in anything that is directly related to my life.
- Use of Wisdom: Wisdom is the key to making appropriate decisions. A lot is Involved with the use of wisdom. I was welcomed into this world on June 19, 1996 at 7:14 pm at Rose Medical Center in Denver Colorado. My biological mother is Debbie Mathews, my adoptive mother is Cathy Ann Close, my biological father is Glenn , and my adoptive father is Steven Lee Close.
2. Cathy Ann Close is hard working, caring, and is more of a mother figure then my biological mother ever was. Cathy cares unconditionally for me which is a wonderful attribute that gives a sense of warmth and comfort into any situation or time of distress. Any time I need her she’s ALWAYS there for me, which brings me closer to her both physically and emotionally. As an adopted child I had a hard time trusting this family and making a transition, but Cathy and I have always had a good relationship which made that transition much easier and I felt like I had no reason to be afraid. I believe Cathy has lived her life to the fullest and continues to in every day that passes. She stays optimistic and always brings positive life into our home, no matter how stressful or lousy her day was. In my eyes, Cathy Close is my real mother.
Steven Lee Close is my adoptive father. My father is a kind and understanding man that has definitely influenced my life. My father has always had this mindset of constant “work” which has positively and negatively impacted his life. The way I see it is this mindset has allowed him to be both successful and motivated, but at the same time, I believe that this mindset has pushed him to the point where he has to constantly be doing something or repeating his previous work. I admire my father for the hard working man he is, but I don't follow his same system. That's not to say that I don't follow after him, I just don't believe in the same things he does.
My adoptive parents have been such a huge influence on me, even though I am a very independent child. These two wonderful human beings made the decision to bring me into their lives and care for me like I was their own. It's amazing to think that just eleven years ago I had no idea who these people were, but thinking back I'm so grateful that I was brought into this family. There is no doubt in my mind that there wouldn't have been a better family out there for me. Steve and Cathy Close couldn't have effected my life better any more than they already have.
4. Jeffrey Close is my adoptive brother from the Close family, that was there for me every step of the way when I was welcomed into this family. Jeffrey Close is a smart, carefree person who doesn't really care much about what people think about him. I personally have always admired my brother for the ways he has defended me and provided support for me both emotionally and physically during times of need. My brother and I have always had a great relationship from the time where the Close family came to visit at my adoption open house. My brother has affected my life positively in every aspect.
5. There have been multiple, pivotal moments in my life. I believe that the most significant moments in my life was the day I got adopted and when I was diagnosed with Type One Diabetes. Being adopted was a crucial moment in my life because before that point I was being moved around to different adoptive care homes. It was really hard on me because during that time I had no contact with my biological siblings: Chandelle, Josh, and Destiny. Getting adopted was also a vital moment for me because I finally had a place to live and a family I could call my own. Along with my adoption, getting diagnosed with Type One Diabetes continues to be a pivotal moment in my life. On February 6, 2014 at approximately 11:30 pm, I was diagnosed with Type One Diabetes at Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs. When I was admitted into the emergency room that night they had run a blood test and told my mother and father that my blood glucose was at 1,180mg/ds, which was abnormally higher than usual. The blood glucose of a healthy, non-diabetic teenager usually ranges from 70-99 mg/ds. So, from the results of my blood glucose test, there was obviously something wrong.
6. Some of the things that make me happy include snowboarding, skateboarding, and spending time with my family. Snowboarding is one of the many liberties of living in the high country. The reason as to why snowboarding makes me so happy is because the moment I set foot on my board, all reality gets blurred and nothing else stands between me and the mountain. I have been snowboarding every year, religiously, for the past ten years and soon that’s going to come to an end. Once I'm out of school I won't be able to afford a pass. I am taking advantage of my last year of snowboarding and along with that comes escaping reality. Skateboarding is one of the many things that make me happy. The reason why skateboarding makes me happy is because when I'm out on my board I get into the flow of things and start stomping all my tricks which is one of the best feelings ever. I was self taught and any tricks I know now I learned on my own. Some of these tricks took up to a year to fully understand and be consistent with landing them. Mastering these tricks has shown me that if you stick with something long enough and you succeed, you will be able to accomplish whatever is set forth in front of you. Skateboarding also is a way I get away from all the problems and things going on in my life at that moment. To conclude the attributes that make me happy I believe that there is nothing more important in life than family. Family makes me happy because there isn't anyone else out there that I get along with better than family. With that being said you can understand why family makes me happy, along with skateboarding and snowboarding.
7. The one thing that makes me sad in my life is inconsiderate people. The reason for that is because people that don't show integrity have no moral fiber and won't work to make other peoples lives easier. I find integrity to be significant in any human being because it gives you a sense of moral strength.
8. Everyone has their own strengths, talents, and gifts. I, personally, have many strengths, including my ability to be a good friend, and having a warm heart. I will always be there for my friends no matter what, even friends that aren't so involved in my life any more. Friends are the next most important people in my life after family. Having a warm heart is a strength because it allows me to be a very compassionate individual and gives me a very welcoming personality. Being warm hearted allows me to be caring towards any living animal or human being. The caring and well being of people is essential for the ability to survive.
My strongest talents are in snowboarding and skateboarding. I have been snowboarding for the past eleven years. I started out in AVSC, which is a ski and snowboard school that provided lessons for me on Snowmass Mountain starting when I was seven and continuing for at least three years. Once we moved to Glenwood Springs from Carbondale, I was no longer involved in those lessons because we couldn't afford the commute. I have slowly progressed over the years, leading me to be considered an advanced rider. Skateboarding is a different story. The skills I have today in skateboarding I learned on my own. I can face any skatepark feature and be comfortable with it.
Some of my positive characteristics include me being independent, honest, and reliable. I have always been a very independent person because I feel like I shouldn't take other peoples time to get me to understand or interpret something. I like to learn things on my own. Honesty has always been one of my strongest characteristics. I have always been a reliable person whether it be at work or outside of work.
9. There are many areas of my life that need work but I think that the one specific area that needs the most work is my lack of motivation along with my procrastination. I tend to be pretty lazy which isn't the greatest attribute and sometimes it causes some complications in school and it can carry into my life outside of school. My lack of motivation negatively influences my life because it causes me to procrastinate which then leads to me putting things off until the last minute and brings unnecessary stress into my life.
11. Beauty in my opinion is accepting and appreciating other human beings for who they are. The ability to accept others and appreciate their presence is true beauty because it allows you to bond both intellectually and physically. You're able to bond intellectually by getting into deep conversations that express the true beauty in one's self. Being able to bond intellectually will later bring bonding physically which consists of going out and doing things with that person. So essentially, beauty is shown when you take the time to appreciate someone as a whole and not just what's on the outside.
12. Friendship has many meanings. Friendship in my opinion is openly doing things for one another and providing support in any situation. Friendship is important in anyones life because friends teach you and allow you to grow socially. Friends teach you in a way that will allow you to find out who you're truly compatible with. For example, many people see the change in friends with the transition from middle school to high school. I, myself, saw this transition when I made the change from middle school to high school, and from this experience I have learned that having a friendship is more than just spending time with that person, it's sharing life events together.
13. “Home” in my perspective is where most people spend their time with both family and friends. Home is an environment where you feel safe and can express any feelings without contemplation. Although I have lived my life in many different homes, I feel as though I can finally say I've found my place at home. My home is with the Close family.
15. My future happiness relies on me graduating high school and making my parents proud. Graduating high school and getting my diploma will open up so many doors and provide many opportunities that will allow me to excel further in my life. Happiness is more than just proving yourself to society, it's proving to yourself that it's possible to achieve anything that you put your mind to.
16. Success is reaching moral goals and continuously setting new ones. In my opinion I would consider myself successful because I set moral goals and won't continue to set new ones until I've achieved the ones I've already set. I recently started putting up notes that have my weekly goals set forth. This method allows for me to be on top of everything that's going on in my life both in school and out.
